Overview

Heavy Melting Steel

HMS stands for heavy melting steel: steel thick and clean enough for a steelworks to melt down as it is. It's the main grade of scrap steel, and most of it comes from demolition, building sites, fabrication shops and farms.

It's paid by the tonne, at a price that follows the steel market. We check every load at the yard, and steel that's thin, or still has timber, concrete, plastic or rubber on it, doesn't make the HMS grade. Copper, brass, aluminium and stainless steel are worth far more, so take them off and bring them in separately.

Grades We Buy

  • HMS 1

Clean steel about 6 mm thick or more: beams, columns, plate and heavy structural offcuts.

  • HMS 2

Steel about 3 to 6 mm thick, painted and galvanised steel included: channel, angle, flat bar and lighter sections.

  • Pipe & Hollow Section

Thick-walled steel pipe, tube and box section, empty of water, oil and anything else.

  • Steel with Attachments

Frames, trailers and tanks with timber, concrete, plastic or rubber still on. Paid at a lower rate until stripped.

How It Works

Selling scrap at our Hallam yard takes a few minutes.

  1. Bring it in

Bring your scrap to our Hallam yard in the car, ute or trailer. For bigger loads, we can collect.

  2. We sort and weigh it

We sort your metal by grade and weigh each grade on its own, so every kilo is paid at the right price.

  3. Show your ID

Victorian law requires us to record photo ID from everyone who sells us scrap metal.

  4. Get paid

We pay by bank transfer, as scrap metal dealers in Victoria can't pay in cash. Bring your BSB and account number.
